Chapter 10

River

I feel the wash of Sybil’s wards cover the door. I reach out to push them, testing the edges of her magic without tripping it; something my mother taught me to do years ago. I can see the ends of her weaving. It’s neatly done, but I can see the seams. If I can see the seams someone else could too. Using my unique abilities, honed by my mother the Ward Adept, but gifted to me by my half selkie-half Midnight Court father, I settle my own ward over hers, keying it to respond to her as if there were only her wards. An invisible fence to keep my princess safe. To anyone else it will look as though Sybil is the only one who’d added wards. Only another Ward Adept or another Mealladh, master of Illusions and Deception from the Midnight Court would even begin to see anything else.

Satisfied with my work I push my hands into my pockets and walk away casting a glance at Nox’s door. I wonder for a moment if I should knock, talk to him, then shake my head and turn to the elevator. He doesn’t need me to show up smelling like Sybil now. The selkie part of me, the animal part of me, likes the idea of knocking on his door, letting him see the marks my woman had left on me. She’d chosen me, but the Fae part of my mind knows what he is going through at the moment and feels sorry for him.

I know what it feels to be Called to another. I can feel the connection between my heart and Sybil’s as if there were actual strings that wind tighter each time we’re together. At the moment I can feel her sated and happy drifting off to sleep behind me. If I didn’t have so many secrets I needed to keep from her, I would lower the barriers around my mind and let her feel me too.

Cool night air brushes my cheeks when I leave Taliesen Hall behind. A few others are still out and about on the quad. I nod to a few of them. A couple of them know me as the Headmistress’ nephew. I share classes with others.

I stop for a moment to look up at Sybil’s bedroom window. The light clicks off. Only ten o’clock and she’s calling it a night. I can’t help the grin, must have worn her out.

With a spring in my step I turn away from the school buildings, the residences and lecture halls to the road that curves around past the gymnasium. It’s well warded, but I add an extra personal ward around myself as well and call a touch of flame to my hands. My mother’s Summer Court blood is weak, but it is enough to allow me to call a bit of fire, enough to light my way and sting if I need to get away. Most of my abilities come from my forgotten father, the man who’d sired me and left my mother to raise me alone.
